Stephenville 13, Aledo 6 (Halftime)

This game has lived up to its potential. The Yellow Jackets have a 13-6 lead at halftime and will get the ball back to start the second half. But the Aledo offense could get rolling if Johnathan Gray finds some holes. Here's a recap of the first half.

In the first half, Aledo took a 6-0 lead when junior Cameron Cunningham took a punt back 93 yards, going virtually untouched down the far sideline.

After that, though, Stephenville dominated the half. The Yellow Jackets went on to score 13 unanswered points with two field goals and a late first half TD.

With 3:41 left in the half, Stephenville got the ball back on its own 2. But the Yellow Jackets calmly marched 98 yards in 12 plays, taking a 13-6 lead to the locker rooms on Connor Washington’s 9-yard TD pass to Cole Stokes with 10 seconds left in the half.

The Stephenville defense played well, too. It held Aledo to two first downs and 77 total yards in the first half.

Not too windy in Odessa
The Arlington Colts and the Odessa Bronchos are about 10 minutes from kickoff. Suprisingly the wind isn't too ferocious out here in the wide open West Texas Plains.

Lake Dallas, Everman squaring off soon
There's a little bit of rain falling here at Pennington Field, where Everman and Lake Dallas will square off at 7:30.
I saw Lake Dallas last week in their victotry over Birdville. Impressive. This is a pretty big team, and quarterback James Franklin is good at mixing it up. I'd give his running game the edge.
Everman I've seen twice. Love the way this team plays (I love all teams that are predominantly rushing ones). So if this game is anything like the Lake Dallas-Birdville game I saw last week, it'll be very close and very entertaining.
I'll keep you posted, folks.

Martin looks forward to 'big stage'
Arlington Martin is in the second round of the playoffs for only the third time after its 50-6 victory against Haltom last week. Now the Warriors are preparing to face one of the most famous names in Texas high school football -- Odessa Permian. It's a mental challenge as much as a physical one.

"This is Mojo we're talking about," Warriors coach Bob Wager said. "For us, it's a big stage, one that we as a program have not been on very many times and one that they have made a living on. So you've got that factor. But once you put that aside, it comes down to players and making plays. We're excited about the opportunity to match ourselves against one of the great traditions in the state."

Game time is 1 p.m. Saturday at Ratliff Stadium in Abilene. The winner moves on in the 5A Division I bracket to face Euless Trinity or Plano -- two more of the state's most noted powers.

Coach says Trinity QB more confident

Willie Hubbard is a more confident, aggressive quarterback now than when he started the season as a first-year starter for Euless Trinity, coach Steve Lineweaver said. His improvement, and that of the offensive line, are the most notable for the Trojans, who open the playoffs at 11 a.m. Saturday against Flower Mound at Cowboys Stadium.

"Just his feel for when to throw it," Lineweaver said of Hubbard's main area of improvement. "He was very cautious at first and would not throw it for fear of making a mistake. We just started telling him in practice to throw interceptions -- we wanted him to and just not to worry about it. And the line has given him excellent protection. That has helped his confidence, too."

Hubbard threw for 905 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Trojans (8-2).

Nolan named Army Strong Team of the Week
Dave Campbell's Texas Football honored the Nolan Catholic Vikings as the Army Strong Team of the Week in the private school division last week.
“In a battle of undefeated teams, Nolan came up with a big defensive effort en route to a 22-14 win over TCA-Addison,” said Adam Hochfelder, general manager of Dave Campbell's Texas Football. “The Vikings had two interceptions and recovered a fumble to finish the regular season undefeated for the first time in the school’s 44-year history.”
The award will be presented to the team at a time to be determined later this week by a representative of the U.S. Army.
"The U.S. Army is recognizing the student-athletes at Nolan Catholic High School for demonstrating qualities similar to those exhibited by its Soldiers. Student-athletes and Soldiers share similar values, but more importantly they must be mentally, emotionally and physically strong," said Captain Adam Drybread. "We expect to see some of these young men competing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the college level, or maybe even professionally in the future."

Early Test for Aledo

The Aledo Bearcats lost one game all season, and it was two months ago. In that game, Aledo simply couldn’t stop the Weatherford wishbone offense, as the Roos held on for a 28-27 victory.

In all, Weatherford rushed for 281 yards on 50 carries. For Aledo, at least it was a non-district game. Now, though, Aledo faces a similar team, when it meets Little Elm in the first round of the Class 4A, Division II playoffs Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Northwest ISD Stadium in Justin.

“It makes me very nervous,” Aledo coach Tim Buchanan said of facing another wishbone team.

Well, did his team learn anything from that loss?

“We better have,” Buchanan said.

If Aledo advances to the second round, it would likely meet Stephenville, a team it beat 20-16 in the season-opener.

Bowie's Davis making throws
Arlington Bowie quarterback Deric Davis is coming off his first 400-yard game of the season, the result of his ability to put the ball in tight places -- where few quarterbacks can, coach Kenny Perry said.
"Some of the deep areas, the deeper outs and fades, he can throw on a line," Perry said. "I've been saying all year how good a quarterback he is. Plus, the kids he's throwing to are great weapons."
The Volunteers, who meet Richland in a 5A Division I bidistrict game Thursday night at Cowboys Stadium, have been spreading it around. Their top three receivers have 35 catches each, and the next two have 29.

Eastern Hills at its best
Fort Worth Eastern Hills coach Michael Prewitt said his team is coming off one of its best game of the season, a 23-8 victory against Fort Worth Polytechnic. "The first half was definitely the best half we've played all year," he said. "The defense played the best game they've played all year. We tackled extremely well and focused on our responsibilities."
Now the Highlanders get ready for a playoff game. They take on Mansfield Legacy in a 4A Division I bidistrict game at 7 Friday at Burleson. (Kickoff is at 7 so the Burleson folks can get to Cowboys Stadium in time to watch some of the Elks' playoff game against Arlington).
Eastern Hills does not look like the same team that started the season, Prewitt said. "We went back and looked at some film from the second week of the season against Brewer, and we look like a completely different football team," he said. "It's amazing."

Poly riding D-1 prospects
After its 41-7 victory over Fort Worth Western Hills on Thursday night, Fort Worth Polytechnic put itself in great shape to make the playoffs for the first time since 1990. And the Parrots are doing it with two Division-I prospects.

Running back/ defensive back Duran Hollis rushed for 162 yards on 14 carries, including TD runs of 80 and 40 yards. The 5-10, 200-pound Hollis also had an interception. So, it's easy to see why Hollis already has offers from six schools (Baylor, Iowa State, Iowa, Houston, UT-El Paso and Western Kentucky).

Hollis visited Iowa State last month and enjoyed meeting coach Paul Rhoads.

"It was a good visit, I like Ames and the coach," Hollis said.

But Hollis has yet to commit anywhere.

Hollis' backfield mate, senior quarterback Davion Thornton, is also drawing attention from D-1 scouts. On Thursday, Thornton rushed for 187 yards on 12 carries, including TD runs of 27, 80 and 44 yards.

Thornton isn't sure where he'll end up next year, but he has offers from New Mexico and Baylor.

Regardless of where Hollis or Thornton land next year, this year Poly is going to ride them as far as it can.

"When the game is on the line, we're going to put it in their hands," Poly coach Othell Robinson said. "They know that we're going to go with them, win or lose."

Arlington Sam Houston receiver Kameel Jackson committed to Oklahoma over the weekend, according to Texans coach Danny Edelman. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Jackson is the first commit for the Sooners’ 2011 class.
“He has been going back and forth with several offers since the season started,” Edelman said. “He’s had anywhere from eight to 10 different schools that have offered him.”
Jackson, whose name blew up this summer on the camp circuit, also had offers from Tennessee, Nebraska, Kansas, Tulsa and Texas A&M.
“I think with some peace of mind and understanding that Oklahoma is a great university, he and his family sat down and they made a decision this past weekend,” Edelman said.
Jackson, who has missed several games with an injury this season but should return this week, caught 54 passes for 761 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore last season.

Why did Grapevine take a safety?
During Grapevine's 37-19 victory against L.D. Bell the Mustangs were backed up to their own 5-yard line. Rather than punt from their own endzone, Grapevine coach Dave Henigan elected to intentionally take the safety.
But why?
Well Henigan wanted to give his punter room but more importantly he was playing the points game.
See last year Keller lost the playoff tiebreaker on a coinflip. This year, District 5-5A will use points as a tiebreaker with +14 per game the maximum. So Henigan opted to give up the 2 rather than risk the punt being blocked or giving L.D. Bell field position for a quick TD.

Dunbar wins district opener
Darius White set up one touchdown with a missed field goal return and scored on a punt return and a long pass play to help the Dunbar Wildcats defeat the Polytechnic Parrots 36-7 in the District 7-4A West opener at Clark Field.
Polytechnic (4-2, 0-1) -- which played the second half without injured quarterback Damion Thornton -- outgained the Wildcats 241 yards to 112 in the first half, but missed on too many scoring opportunities and trailed 14-7 at halftime.
White had a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown on the last play of the third quarter, then teamed with quarterback Dominique Sanders on a 57-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats (4-2, 1-0) a 34-7 lead.
The game can be seen on Fort Worth Community Cable Channel 31 at 7 p.m. Sunday or viewed at fortworthgov.org. Click the "Watch Online Now" button and choose the Community Channel Program.

Martin the Real Deal; Beats Arlington 38-20
Don’t be fooled by Arlington Martin’s 3-3 overall record. This is one of the better teams in the area. Martin lost by eight to top-rated Cedar Hill two weeks ago and dropped a 23-21 game to Arlington Bowie on a last second field goal. On Friday, the Warriors used a dominant second half to beat Arlington 38-20. Danzel Williams ran 23 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Russel Bellomy, who averages 107 yards passing per game, threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Arlington’s Matt Joeckel, who averages 154.9 yards per game, threw for 212 and three touchdowns. But the Warriors picked him off twice in the second half, where it also held the Colts to two failed fourth down attempts.
Martin used drives of 14 and 18 plays in the first half to keep the Colts high-octane offense off the field. And it paid off as it went into the locker room up 17-13. Martin scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half to pull away.

Summit is deep in Mansfield territory to start the fourth quarter. Neither team was able to get a drive going in the third quarter, save Summit's latest effort. The Jaguars start the fourth quarter on the Mansfield four yard line.
At the half, Summit's passing game was the difference at Vernon Newsom Stadium. Summit receiver John Ellis has had a career night thus far, scoring on a 79-yard pass and a 29-yard pass and totaling 121 yards receiving in the first half.

Mansfield put up a late rally, as running back George Baltimore scored on a 5-yard run with 45 seconds left in the half to make the score 20-17.

Elks' running back Blake Smith led the charge with 133 yards on 16 carries with touchdown runs of 1 and 5 yards. Amery Duncan added a 2-yard run. Stop me if you've heard this before, folks. Although I'm guessing in Aledo it never gets old.

Johnathan Gray was at it again, this time on a 70-yard touchdown rush to bolster Aledo's lead, 28-12, with 5:03 remaining in the third.

Dunbar leads at halftime
Fort Worth Dunbar is up 14-7 over Fort Worth Polytechnic at halftime despite Poly outgaining Dunbar 240 yards to 112. Poly had a 35-yard field goal attempt come up short, and Dunbar's Darius White returned the ball from nine yards deep in his end zone to the Parrots' 10. That set up Jordan Rollerson's 10-yard run that gave the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.

Sam Houston running back Jonathan Parsons was stopped at the Lamar 1 with 8 seconds to go in the first half and the Texans could not get lined up to snap the ball in time to run another play. Parsons was on the ground shaken up after the play, but the officials ruled time had expired.
It was one of the few times so far that one of the teams failed to score. Vikings running back Ja'Terian Douglas scored from 1-yard out, his third TD of the game, to give Lamar the lead late in the second quarter. Douglas has rushed for 105 yards on 18 carries so far. He has also scored on a 2-point conversion run.
Texans quarterback Jamal Turner has accounted for three touchdowns, including scoring passes of 50 yards and 14 yards. He also scored on a 14-yard run early in the second quarter to give Sam Houston a 21-20 lead. Turner has thrown for 145 yards and rushed for 62.
The Vikings got a touchdown on a 94-yard kickoff return by Jacob Bennett. After a missed PAT, Lamar led 20-14.

But the Warriors got their ground game rolling, ate up a lot of clock and took the lead with the opening possession of the second half. Russell Bellomy's 6-yard touchdown run with 6:20 left in the third was the lasting scoring play until Valadez's kick. Langston Williams set Bowie up at its own 49 with a good punt return. Arlington is dominating this game on offense. The Colts have touchdown drives of 76, 80 and 42 yards, and Matt Joeckel has completed 12 of 13 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. But the defense is starring, too. The Colts have held Lamar's Ja'Terian Douglas to 16 yards on 13 carries, dropping him for a loss or no gain seven times. QB Tyler Wilson is 3-for-8 for 42 yards and an interception.

The only mistake Arlington made was a muffed punt that extended a Lamar possession. But the Vikings had to punt each time, plus the interception. Colts linebacker Laderice Sanders had a sack and a tackle for loss in the first half. Arlington gets the ball to start the second half.

Burleson down 27-0
Well folks,
I wish I had better news to report from our Game of the Week. But as it stands, it's not looking very good for the home team.

Herschel Sims just rushed for his second touchdown, this one for 71 yards, as Abilene takes a 27-0 lead. And there's still about six minutes left in the first half.

Arlington 7, Lamar 0 (end of 1st)
Brandon Lewis caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Matt Joeckel off a fake field goal to give Arlington High the first points in the Peach Bowl. Lewis lined up split left and no one covered him, so either Joeckel saw him uncovered, or the Colts were planning to fake all along. Either way, the play ended a 76-yard opening possession for the Colts. Lamar punted twice in the first quarter, although one punt was muffed and recovered by the Vikings.

It's a night of big plays, and Marquis Jackson of Arlington Heights is making most of them. FOX Sports Southwest Road Tour at 4-5A Showdown
As if the District 4-5A opener between Arlington and Arlington Lamar wasn't intriguing enough, it will be accompanied by the FOX Sports Southwest Road Tour powered by Ford. The traveling high school football fan festival makes weekly stops to the state's top games and gives fans the opportunity to enjoy pregame activities in an interactive village set up outside the stadium, including a chance to win an on-air sports anchor contract with FSSW and appear on the network's UIL state championship telecast in December.
"This is another opportunity to showcase our enthusiasm for high school football across the state of Texas," said FOX Sports Southwest Senior Vice President/General Manager Jon Heidtke. "We're excited to partner with our sponsors to get involved with high school football on a grass-roots level and to give fans a chance to enjoy fun games and activities before the game."

Injured Richland QB expected back
Richland coach Gene Wier said said injured quarterback Tyler Cotton will be back this season. Wier would not elaborate on Cotton’s injury.

"We anticipate him being back in a timely manner," Wier said. "It’s not season-ending."

I just can’t tell you if it’ll be this week, next week or the week after.”

Cotton, a senior, is among the area’s leading quarterbacks with 755 yards passing and seven touchdowns. He’s completed 60 percent of his passes.

Cotton was injured in the Rebels’ 26-21 nondistrict victory Friday over Keller Central. Richland (3-1), idle this week, starts its District 3-5A schedule Oct. 1 at home against North Crowley.

Tevin Williams scored his second TD, a 4-yard run, for a 21-14 lead with 8:23 left in the second quarter. But the Trojans missed a golden chance to add to the lead. With three minutes left in the first half, cornerback Donte Charleston intercepted a pass and returned it 53 yards to the 3-yard line, but two personal fouls after the play cost the Trojans 30 yards, and they couldn't move from the 33.

Both teams scored on their first two possessions, each on passes of 39 yards and runs of 2 yards, coincidentally. Then Trinity went up 21-14. Plano East 13, Heritage 0 (H)
The ball is too slippery to hang on to at Mustang-Panther Stadium, where a soft rain has been falling the entire game. Colleyville Heritage has commited three turnovers and had a punt blocked in the end zone, and Plano East has lost the ball four times. Robert Goheen and Cody Love each have interceptions for Colleyville Heritage, and Malik McKenzie and Josh Slanker each have fumble recoveries. The loose ball is also slowing the Panthers, who have commited five fumbles, losing two.

30 minutes to kickoff between Trinity-Cedar Hill
It's about 30 minutes away and Trinity is on the Pennington Field turf in full black, pants, jerseys and helmets. There's a light rain but visability shouldn't be an issue though a slippery ball might. Cedar Hill sports their white and red combination.
The showdown here will be dynamic running backs in Trinity's Tevin Williams vs. Cedar Hill's Ben Malena.

Arl. Heights up 14-0 at the half
The Marquis Jackson-Omar Valadez connection has worked twice today, and both scoring drives have been two plays. So it's been quick work for a 14-0 advantage as we sit at halftime here at Farrington Field.

There are no bands, as I said (well, actually, it looks like Paschal brought a few band members and they're entertaining us right now). Otherwise the rain looks like it's let up a lot and we'll be playing football again in about 15 minutes.

It's a beautiful day for football!
Well, if you're a duck, anyway.
It's still raining pretty good here at Farrington Field, where Arlington Heights and Paschal are warming up (actually, Heights is. Paschal is off the field at the moment). There will be no halftime shows for the bands today, so it's just all football all the time.

Get your swimmers on and get ready for football.
